GENIUS HOUR

We had GREAT fun at Genius Hour.  We had to make our do something WITH a friend.  We have been talking all about Friendship so we put it to the test!
Look at the wonderful creations we came up with.

MCDONALDS RICH TASK

You might hear us talking about Rich Tasks in Maths.  These are open ended questions that there are often multiple answers to or multiple ways to solve it.  Last week we had a McDonalds inspired Rich Task.  Kate's Dad works there!

It was a huge hit with the kids!

HARVESTING POTATOES

On Friday some of the kids in Piako Rua harvested the potatoes that the Gardening Club had been growing.  Mrs Lunn and Mrs Ruawai had to dig up the potatoes and then we had a feel around in the dirt to find the potatoes.

The potatoes are going to be used in the Hangi today.

Look how many we found! Some are too green to use and some are too small.
The rest will be delicious!

Outdoor Classroom

We are very lucky to be so close to the outdoor classroom, just around the back of Piako Rua. As part of our Term 4 Inquiry about Nature, we have been exploring and learning in our outdoor classroom. Here are some pictures of the forts and huts we have created, the fun we have had, and the interesting fungi we have found.

ATHLETICS DAY

Yesterday it was Athletics Sports.  We went to do shotput and did discus.  We did hurdles.  We had morning tea.  Then we went to do high jump.  We did long jump then we did sprints.  After, we did relays.  It was so much fun.  Georgia (Mrs Lunn's daughter) did the clapper things.  She said "Ready, set go!"  I won the race.  My Mum and Dad, my Nanny and Grandad and Josh were there too.  He is my biggest brother.  They were cheering for me.  I love them.  I was in the relays.  Alyssa was there too.

Yesterday, I went to Athletics and I won the first race of the sprints.  It was fun but I was very puffed, especially in the relays.

Yesterday at the Athletics at Massey University, Kereu was my house colour.  We took the bus to Massey.  We waked to the track.  We did discuss, shotput, long jump, high jump, sprints and hurdles,
My Favourite was discus.  You have to throw a discus by pulling your hand back and forwards then throw!

JOKE OF THE DAY

You have probably seen the Joke of the Day card at your house.

First thing each day at Piako 2 Whanau, someone shares a joke.
Our teachers say that laughing is a great way to relax and to be more open to learning.

William told a great joke this week...

What is a mouse's favourite game?
Hide and squeak!

MAGIC NUMBER

Each day we record which kids are away on the window.  We work out out Nama Miharo - our Magic number.  We remember the Magic Number ALL day, so if there is an emergency and we need to evacuate, the teachers can quickly count us and check if anyone is missing.

Usually Mason P, writes on the window, but on this day, his friend Jorden asked have a go.
Jorden did a great job.

ENGINEERING - PIAKO RUA STYLE

Angus, Amber and Blade had a fabulous time at school the other day.  They worked together to come up with this AMAZING and creative creation!

It is lovely to see the kids working together to achieve a shared goal.  Way to go kids!

SUN HAT REMINDER

Sun hats are compulsory at school in Term Four.

They are available from the office for $10.

You can bring one from home, but it must be plain, navy blue bucket hat.

Amelia couldn't find her hat the other day, so she improvised😂

OUTSIDE CLASSROOM

We have been spending some time outside in the Outside Classroom lately.  We have been exploring the space and observing and learning all about the plants and trees that are growing there.

Some of us came up with some pretty creative ideas.

We used our sense of smell and touch to explore the bush area.

Mason, Madison and Olive felt the leaves of the Totara tree.  Gosh they are prickly!

Sophie bent a Lemonwood leaf in half.  She found out why the tree is called a Lemonwood.  It smells just like lemon!

Blade had a great time climbing trees.
Oliver and Brax made a cool fort in the bush using pallets and planks of wood.

Look what we found! Old cicada shells!
