SCIENCE OPT IN - WHAT PLANTS NEED

Ms Udy helped some of us set up a science experiment today. First, we watched a video of a bean plant growing from a seed. It grew really fast, and we learnt that in just 25 days, a seed can create a whole plant! Here is the video for you to see:

We started talking about what a seed needs to make it grow. We decided to test what would happen if we gave our plant no water, no heat, or no light. We worked in pairs and prepared some seeds, then put them around our classroom - on sunny windowsills, in a cupboard, and even in the fridge!

We will water them every couple of days (except the one that gets no water!),  check on them and write down how they have grown. Here are our predictions of how each will grow.

PUBLISHED WRITING - THE STORM ON THE SEA OF GALILEE

Yesterday our writing was inspired by Rembrandt's painting The Storm on the Sea of Galilee.
Have a read of our wonderful work...

One stormy night, we went sailing out in the sea.  Then then boat tipped over. Everyone ran to the other side and they stabilised the boat.
By Geordie

One stormy night a ship got hit by lightning.  The sea crashed over the bow.
By Liam

One stormy night there were black clouds zooming across the sky.  A boat came along and was tipping over in the waves.
By Anahera

The waves carefully crept over to the boat.  The boat started to tip.  The sailors started to hikoi (walk) over to the other side of the boat.
By Ava

The man was sailing the boat and there were some people and there was some people were upside down.  They got hurt.  The boat was sinking.
By Noah

One day there was a stormy sea.  There was a ship and there were sailors and a wave came in and the ship split apart.

COOKING - KIND HEARTS

On Friday for cooking, some of the kids made Gingernut biscuits.  We made a big batch for Kind Hearts.  We got to eat some too.  They were delicious!

A CHICKEN COMES TO VISIT

On Friday Mrs Mudge and Jack (Penny's brother) brought in one of Mrs Mudge's chickens to show us.  Mrs Mudge has 4 girl chickens and one boy.  The chicken that came to school was called Hilda.  She is 12 years old!

She lays eggs for Mrs Mudge.

Hilda was very tame.  She even let us pat her!

FRACTIONS

Yesterday we started learning about Fractions.  Fractions are a part of a whole.  We watched this song on YouTube:

Then we had a go at some different activities to learn more about fractions.

Mrs Ruawai showed us ONE WHOLE mandarin.  She peeled the mandarin and we counted how many segments were in the mandarin.  There were 10.  Then she broke the mandarin in HALF.  There were 5 pieces in each half.  Mrs Ruawai gave one of our friends a piece of the mandarin.  She gave them ONE piece out of TEN altogether.  This is called ONE TENTH!

We practised folding different sized squares in half.  We learnt that fractions are equal sized pieces.  If you fold the paper in half you are more likely to be accurate when you try cutting it.   There were a few different ways to do this you know!

We drew around shapes and cut them out.  Then we folded them and cut them in half.

We played a matching game - matching the fractions to the right picture.

You could help us at home by talking about fractions with us.  We would love to eat HALF and apple or a QUARTER of an orange.

PUBLISHED WRITING - THE STONEY BRIDGE

Today's writing motivation was from this painting called The Stoney Bridge by Rembrandt.

I was in my boat when a drop of rain came down.
Black clouds touched my cheek.
A storm was coming.

SAVE THE DATE!

Next Friday the 24th of May, at 12.30pm, we are presenting Assembly!
We hope you can come!

PUBLISHED WRITING - THE GIRL WITH THE DOVE

Today our writing was inspired by the painting The Girl with a Dove by Pablo Picasso.

Whack!  A dove flew into my our windows when my Mum was cleaning them.  So I came running out to see if I was allowed to pick it up and hold it up to my warm heart in my bed.
By Sophie

A dove hurt it's foot.  I will take it inside.  I will look after it.
By Liam

Whack! I looked up and saw a white dove.  I came running outside to save the dove by carefully holding it on my heart.
By Ava

I saw something flash onto the ground.  I ran outside to see what it was.  It was a dove.  I carefully scooped it up and put it to my heart.

CODING

As part of the new Digital Technology Curriculum, we are starting to look at how to code.  We were given a maze and we had to get the mouse to the cheese.  It was pretty easy to draw the way but writing the code for it, proved REALLY tricky.
Lucky we are know how to persevere!

There was a huge variety of ways in which we recorded our codes.
You might like to take to us about this at home.

COOKING - ANZAC BISCUITS

Today we made ANZAC biscuits with Mrs Lunn.  We are sending some up to the Hospital for the Kind Hearts organisation.

TAU - BALANCE

Today with Pa Jack, we talked about feeling TAU.  This means we feel calm, relaxed and balanced.  This is when we are open to learning the best.

Here is the slideshow Mrs Lunn made for us...
It explains the three states if being Toiora, Kuhupo and Tau.

Mrs Lunn took us for a Quiz to see how well we understood it.

We got to draw a picture of us when we feel Tau.

Here is the Quiz.  You might like to do it with us at home.

BACKWARDS COUNTING

In our Maths Knowledge session, we are working on BACKWARDS COUNTING.  This comes in really handy when we are subtracting in Maths.

Here are a few photos of us...

You can help us at home by asking us:
  • Practice counting down from 20, then 30, then 40 etc
  • What number comes BEFORE any given number
  • Skip counting BACKWARDS from 100 in 10s, and 5s ( a lot of us find this tricky)
