MATHS KNOWLEDGE THIS WEEK - FORWARD SEQUENCES

For Maths over the next two weeks we are focusing on Forward Sequences.  This involves saying the number AFTER a number and being able to order numbers from smallest to largest.  Some of us a learning to skip count in 5s and 10s to 100 as well.

You might have seen the tote trays under our Maths wall.  Each workshop has a corresponding tote tray.  When we go to the Rainbow Room for Maths, we take our the tote tray for the workshop we are in and do the different activities in it. Mrs Lunn works with us to play the games and also teaches us at the whiteboard table.
Miss Smith has been working with some of our Maths groups too.

Emma and Brooklyn worked with Mrs Lunn learning how to order numbers to 50.

Here they are working very hard to order some numbers...

You can help us at home by getting us to say the number after, any number you tell us.
You could write some numbers down on pieces of paper for us and we could put them in order for you.
We can also practise skip counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

This is a link to the Caterpillar Counting game, which can also be found under the Maths Games tab on our blog.

THE DOG AND THE MOG

Friday was a special day at Riverdale School.  We had Penny G's mum Laura come in for a Book Launch of the book that she has illustrated!  We got to hear Laura talk about how she drew the pictures using a computer.  It sounded pretty fancy.  The author of the book, Kaye Arnott then read The Dog and the Mog to us.

Lots of us had entered the colouring in competition for today.  We were so proud of Phoebe and Mason P who won prizes from all the entries from Piako Rua.  Congratulations guys!  You might be illustrators too one day - just like Penny's Mum!

Here a video of The Dog and the Mog to watch at home...

ART OPT-INS

It was a hive of activity in Wonderland on Friday.  There were kids busy finishing pieces of Art they have been working on over the last few weeks.

Look at these CREATIVE artists in action...

Hungry Hedgehogs using vivid, dye and water paints

Seahorses using vivid, dye and pastel

Children were also working on making their Bubbly Hydrangeas artwork.  We put dye and water and some dishwashing liquid in the sink.  Then we had to blow bubbles in the dye and carefully lie the paper on top of the bubbles to make the hydrangea print.  Once the red was dry, we did the same with purple dye.  When the dye dries we will glue leaves onto our pictures.

Stay turned for our finished art up on display in the classroom...

MASON THE MASTER MOBILO BUILDER

Mason is a Master Builder with Mobilo.

Today he made a transforming creature.  It can be a car AND an '"animal/creature thingy."

Mason was super proud to show Mrs Lunn what he had made.

NGA MATAPONO - OUR BELIEFS

Nga Matapono is our Beliefs at Riverdale School.  By the time we leave Riverdale, we should be a Self Manager, Competent, Creative, and Effective Communicator

This term's main focus is on being a Self Manager.  We get to move our pins for a variety of reasons.  Some examples of what we might get to move our pin for include:  getting our jobs done quickly in the morning, pack up after ourselves, get our work done quickly, listen carefully to the teacher and put our rubbish in the bin.

Jacob P got to move his Self Manager pin yesterday when he was tidying up after he finished using a game.  Look how happy he is!

We like to look at where we are on our pins.  We set ourselves little goals and talk to our friends about where we are at.  Setting goals and working towards achieving them is part of being a Self Manager.

OLIVER'S PICTURE

Oliver brought his beautiful picture to school this morning to show the teachers.
He and his Mum worked on the picture for a long time.

What a competent artist you are Oliver!

TE WHIRINGAWHA

Today was a pretty special day in Piako Rua.  The teachers and Pa Jack talked to us about Te Whiringawha.  On a Marae, there are four different roles that people play.
They are:

Ariki
  • Leader
Tohunga
  • Expert
  • Treasure
Mangotoa
  • Defender
  • Protector
and finally...

Aronui
  • Administrator
  • Carer
The teachers explained that we are made of parts of each of these.  Some of us have more Aronui for

example, than others.  When we grow, we might change but in the meantime we had to have a think about what colours we thought we are now.

We each were given a stylised picture of a person that we had to colour in.  We needed to think about how much of each colour we think we are.  The teachers were amazed with how well we knew ourselves.
Here are a few examples of our work...

You might like to talk to us about this at home.
You will be pleasantly surprised with how well we can articulate what we talked about today.
